Uncomplicated Cystitis Treatment - Pharmacist Training (Queensland)

Note for pharmacists NOT practising in Queensland

At this stage, the only UTI training available is for pharmacists practising in Queensland. This resulted from the issuing of an extended practice authority from the Queensland Government following an extensive pilot program. The training can be accessed below.

Recently, the New South Wales Government announced they are opening a process to begin a trial for pharmacist prescribing for UTIs in that state. Media reports suggest that other states may follow. The requirements for the proposed NSW trial (including required pharmacist training) have not yet been announced. Until then, there is no UTI training applicable for pharmacists practising in states other than Queensland.

For pharmacists practising in Queensland

From 01 October 2022, the Queensland Government Extended Practice Authority ‘Pharmacists’ (EPA) authorises a pharmacist who has successfully completed training in accordance with the EPA to sell a medicine listed in the EPA to an eligible patient, without the requirement for a prescription, for the treatment of a urinary tract infection.

From 01 November 2022, the Uncomplicated Cystitis Treatment - Pharmacist Training (Queensland) course is free to Queensland College members, Queensland Guild member owners, and QLD pharmacist College non-members.

Course outline

This course covers the training requirements set out by the QLD Government EPA to enable pharmacists in Queensland to deliver a Urinary Tract Infection Community Pharmacy Service. Refer to the College Pharmacist Treatment Guidance: Uncomplicated Cystitis (Queensland) when undertaking this CPD activity.

Learning objectives

After completing this activity pharmacists should be able to:

1. Describe the basis for the development of urinary tract infections including anatomy of the female urinary tract, pathogenesis, and microbiology
2. Outline the key clinical features of urinary tract infections
3. Describe the differential diagnosis of urinary tract infections
4. Discuss antibiotic treatment of urinary tract infections
5. Describe the role of over the counter products in the management of urinary tract infections
6. Outline the pharmacist workflow in the management of uncomplicated cystitis.
